Blogger Of The Month: Martha McKittrick of City Girl Bites

I am very excited to introduce one of the best Registered Dietitian's in NYC, Martha McKittrick, as our March Blogger Of The Month! Martha runs City Girl Bites, an amazing blog with practical nutrition and fitness information for those living on-the-go. She is a Certified Diabetes Educator with an impressive array of nutrition experience. We sat down with Martha to learn more about her career as a dietitian and her blog. She has some special advice for aspiring dietitians and nutritionists as well. Thank you Martha!

What is your nutrition background?

I have a bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition from the University of Massachusetts. I completed my internship at New York Presbyterian Hospital. This sounds a little crazy, but I first got interested in a food related career when I was working at a McDonalds in high school! In addition to being an RD, I’m also a certified diabetes educator. I currently work part time in the outpatient department of a major NYC hospital, have a very busy private practice, and maintain a blog!

What is your favorite part about being a Registered Dietitian?

I love helping people improve their physical and mental health. There is nothing more rewarding than getting an email from a patient thanking me for helping them lower their HbA1c or blood pressure so they can go off medications. Or hearing one of my patients with PCOS tell me she is now pregnant after following my advice and losing 20 pounds.

What is the "mission statement" of City Girl Bites?

My blog, City Girl Bites, provides practical information and tools to help you improve your health and well-being while living on the go. Most of my readers have hectic schedules and don’t spend a lot of time in the kitchen. My blog features the best choices for a fast paced life. I also like to focus on real problems and practical solutions... like what to do when your boyfriend keeps bringing home your favorite flavor of ice cream.

What has nutrition, health, and fitness done for you in your life?

My first job after graduating from the internship was as full-time inpatient RD. I was never a “one job” kind of person, so I started working part time in a local health club as a nutritionist and exercise instructor. I ended up becoming a personal trainer and group exercise instructor for 15 years! I then got into swimming and cycling. The combination of a career in nutrition and interest in staying fit has really helped me stay sane and healthy while living a hectic life.

What advice would you give to dietetic interns and upcoming RDN's?

I’d recommend putting yourself out there. Join local dietetic associations and other groups that interest you (i.e. NY Road Runners Association). Go to as many meetings as possible and network. Get your name out there. Offer to give free lectures anywhere you can, guest blog, write for newsletters, and get involved in social media. Tweet! Make it a point to meet established RDs and volunteer your services. Believe me - a busy RD in private practice would LOVE a motivated student or intern to help her/him out with projects. Bottom line – get as much experience as you can. It will pay off … I promise! Hint: feel free to contact me if you are interested in working or projects or guest blogging!

Favorite sport: Cycling (especially during the weekends over the GW Bridge!)
